Monument record TR 36 NE 137 - Bronze Age Barrow and v-shpaed ditch, Northdown, Margate

TR 37566989 [centred] Cropmarks (ring ditch and two irregular shaped enclosures). [See TR 36 NE 141 and 143] (1) These cropmarks fall in plouhed fields on the summit and south side ofa downland ridge. Nothing was visible. (2) TR 375699. Millmead Road, Margate. A substantial Bronze Age barrow, first detected from the air, was partially excavated two weeks ahead of a major housing development. The ploughed out barrow had been enclosed within a broad V-shaped ditch. The central area contained a series of small pits, some containing inhumations and also a decoratedbeaker. [For enclosures situated nearby see TR 36 NE 143 and TR 36 NE141] (3) An additional cropmark of a single-ditched ring ditch is located at TR 3752 6994. (4)

A ring ditch with internal pits, representing the remains of a Bronze age round barrow, are visible as cropmarks on CUCAP WT86 16-JUN-1959. The feature has since been built over. The feature was mapped as part of the Thanet Landscape Mapping Project. (6)
