Full Description
Watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2003, during the removal of petrol tanks from a former garage during which an in tact sequence of archaeological deposits were revealed in section. The deposits were associated with an assemblage of C12-C14 pottery.
In detail pit 1 which was situated roughly mid way along one of the arms of the site revealed (in section) a disturbed deposit consisting of a mixture of topsoil and sandy aggregate (concrete slab bedding) which sealed an intact sequence of archaeological deposits consisting of a series of mainly horizontal deposits inter cut by various pits, post holes and shallow ditches. They survived to a depth of betweem -1.65m and -2.2m below the present ground surface. Beneath these was a natural looking deposit of pale yellow sand. This rose in one area representing the top of a snad dune crest.
Pits 3 and 4 were located along the second arm of the site, against the Spitalfield Road, frontage. Here the disturbance extended to only 0.25m below the ground level, benath which furth stratified archaeological deposits were revealed. Some of these clearly represent occupational material derived from a building nearby. Towrads spitalfield lane however, was disturbed down to a depth of 0.9m from the present ground level. This may relate to the construction of the road or back fill of service trenches. Again the stratified sequence was observed below this level. (1) (information summarised from source)
