Full Description
Evaluation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2008 revealed two pits and a ditch were cut into an agricultural soil layer and extended into the upper surface of the underlying subsoil to depth of between 0.33m (Pit [12]) and 0.58m (Ditch [10]). That all three features were of a similar phase of occupation is suggested by the similarly between the two pit fills, which consisted of a dark carbon rich silty sand, with a small collection of animal bone, sea shell and pottery. This pottery was dated to AD 1200/25–1275/1300. Sealing all three features and extending across the full extent of the trench was an extensive abandonment/agricultural soil horizon (7) that produced a sizable assortment of domestic debris including pottery dated AD 1250/75–1300/50.
