Full Description
TR 355677. Linear markings with resemblance to the layout of a small Roman building appear as cropmarks and soilmarks on the brow of the west facing slope of the Lydden valley and just in from the road. Metal detector finds in the immediate area have included several Roman Bronze buckles and small coins. (1)
In 2003 a pipeline was laid between Fleete and Haine Hospital and the works were monitored by Wessex Archaeology. A number of features were found south of Manston Court Road but have been linked to this site. They consisted of pits, ditches, post holes and gullies dated to the Late Iron Age and Roman periods. A very large feature, 8.3m wide, is either a very substantial ditch or a quarry, it was not fully explored. Pottery and a copper alloy pin were found. (2)
