Full Description
In 1993 and archaeological evaluation involving trenches was done by Canterbury Archaeological Trust for the Herne Bay Water Treatment Works. Trench 9 was situated close to the cropmark on either side of Church lane and a number of features were noticed in it. Four pits, a ditch, a post hole and an uncertain feature. A pit, the uncertain feature and the B horizon all had finds within them. The B horizon contained pottery have 70 sherds of LBA/EIA pottery, as well as 1 sherd of 'Belgic' pottery, 1 sherd of Roman pottery, two fragments of tile and 1 fragment slag and 17 worked flints also. The pit contained yet more LBA/EIA pottery, 110 sherds, animal bone and 2 fragments of slag. The unknown feature had 24 sherds of LBA/EIA pottery sherds, 3 fragments of Post-Medieval tile and a worked flint frgament. (1)
