Monument record TR 36 NW 47 - Possible late Bronze-early Iron Age enclosure, Hartsdown, Near Margate

Summary

Cropmarks previously identified near Hartsdown. During an evaluation of the site in 1995 the inter-connecting sub-circular enclosures were found to contain small quantities of late bronze - early Iron Age pottery sherds. The lack of archaeological material across the site led to the interpretation as cattle pounds or similar.

The cropmark remains of two conjoined sub-circular enclosures and a curving ditch are visible on aerial photographs: CUCAP BTG83 26-JUN-1975, NMR 3115/0086 02-JUL-1986 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM JULY-2013 ACCESSED 08-NOV-2023. The enclosures are incomplete, ditch-defined. The smaller (c.30m in diameter), northern enclosure appears to be the primary enclosure onto which the larger enclosure (38m in diameter) is attached. The smaller enclosure may have been attached to a curving linear ditch to the north. This site has been surveyed and mapped from aerial photographs in the late 1990s by the RCHME for the Kent NMP. This survey suggests a more complete northern enclosure and relationship with the linear ditch, but this project had access to crucial CUCAP aerial photographs unavailable to this most recent (2024) survey. These features have recently been mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 (10-12)
