Full Description

In 1994 a watching brief was done on the pipeline for the Herne Bay Water Treatment. Eight ditches, three gullies, eight post holes and two uncharacterised features were all observed on Site 2. Most of them date from the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age (950 - 550 BC) but some was from the Early/Middle Iron Age (550 - 350 BC), and some Late Iron Age/Early Roman material. This area was part of a larger settlement that stretched into modern Beltinge. A majority of the material dates from 950 -350 BC. There was an apparently hiatus on the site until just before the Roman conquest. (1)

In 1995 a report assessing the archaeology of the Herne Bay Waste Water Treatment plan was compiled. Eight ditches, three gulleis, two pits and eigth post hoels were present on the site. The dating of ths ite is largely reliant of the pottery recovered, about 500 sherds/ Most date to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age c.950-55 BC, and a smaller amount dating to the Early/Middle Iron Age c.500-350 BC. Very few sherd surpass these to the Roman period. Ity appears this site is a Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age settlement complex, it is possible that there is limited Roman activty but it is largely uninhabited after 200 AD up until the 20th century.
