Full Description
In 1994 a watching brief was done on the pipeline for the Herne Bay Water Treatment. Four ditches, three gullies and a pit were all found on Site 4. It appeared the transect had clipped what was thought to be part of an Iron Age settlement complex. The larger ditches form an enclosure and the small gullies make up field boundarys or perhaps animal pens. The pottery recovered is unualy is the fact it is both Middle to Late Iron Age and the Later Iron Age or Belgic type, two separate tradition, thus showing a transitional period where the site was used. In 1995 a report assessing the archaeology of the Herne Bay Waste Water Treatment plan was compiled. Four ditches, three gullies and a pit were found, which have been referred to as being related to an extensive settlement. The larger dicthes are probably related to some sort of enclosure such as field boundaries or animal pens. The dating of the site is based on the pottery recovered form the area. 200 sherds were recovered and were dateable to tge Late Iron Age c. 1st century BC - 1st century AD. A few unstaratified sherd date to earleir but these are thought to relate to another Early Iron Age occupation site established nearby to the south-east. Two separate potting traditions are present on site. (2)
