Full Description

In 1990 a desk based assessment was carried out for the site and area by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. (5)

In 1992 an evaluation was carried out at Waterbrook Farm by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The area showed signs of fairly intensive occupation to the north, with pits and post holes and ditches. The features exacvated have considerable quanities of pottery within them. A gully and numerous post holes have been collectively inferred as a round house, though trenches extending east and west thought have revealed no more traces of a settlement. (3)

In 1993 an excavation, following the evaluation in 1992, was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at Waterbrook Farm. It was confirmed that a late Iron Age or early Roman round house was present. The structure is less than 6m in diameter which was a common size for this type of building. A second round house may also have been present. Another structural feature was also excavated, which was represented by four large post pits in a rectangle. Again this type of structure is common on Iron Age sites and are thought to be related to grain storage. Enclosures and ditches related to drainage are present. (2)

In 1993 a watching brief was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at Waterbrook Farm. During topsoil stripping two small post-pits or pits were observed. It is thought they may be Iron Age in date. A heavily truncated cremation was found and excavated. It was thought it may be Iron Age too. (1)

Part of settlement was picked up in geophysical survey in 2003 conducted by Pre-Construct Geophysics. (4)
In an excavation in 2007 the entrance to a large Iron Age double ditched enclosure was identified. The ditch fills contained fair amounts of pottery, mostly large un-abraded and well-datable sherds. Some of the cremation pits excavated were recovered close to the entrance and may prove to relate to this phase. (6)
