Full Description
In 1994 a watching brief was done on the pipeline for the Herne Bay Water Treatment. During this part of the watching brief, Site 6, 41 pits, 15 ditches and gullies and 10 post holes were observed. Most of the pottery was Late Bronze Age but some was Late Iron Age/ Early Roman. It is thought this area is an enclosed Late Bronze Age settlement. (1)
In 1995 a report assessing the archaeology of the Herne Bay Waste Water Treatment plan was compiled. 1500 sherds were recovered, most of it being Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and the pottery along with the presents of the features strongly suggest a settlement here. There are other features in the surrounding area which have been suggested as outliers for this settlement. It is suggested this settlemetn is contemparay with the consierable activity which is occuring at Highstead. It appears only one feature outdates the settlemetn and this ia a ditch which is thought to be Late Iron Age/Romano-British rather than Late Bronze Age/Early Iorn Age. (2)
