Full Description

In 1994 a watching brief was done on the pipeline for the Herne Bay Water Treatment. At Site 9, 18 pits, 6 ditches and 6 post holes were all noticed. There was an Early Iron Age enclosure on the site which suggests Early Iron Age occupation on the site, but this seems to have come to an end in the Middle Iron Age. A rubbish pit yeilded pottery of this date as well as an iron object. (1)

In 1995 a report assessing the archaeology of the Herne Bay Waste Water Treatment plan was compiled. Just over 150 features in all were recorded (in the end 23 pits, 3 pit complexes, 19 ditches and gullies and 105 post holes). The ditches and a gullies were probably part of a rectilinear field system which post-dated the Iron Age, and probably in all have four phases to represent a series of field boundaries. The ditch contained belgic and Roman pottery helping to date it to this period. The settlement part of this site is very instense and dates between 600 BC - 200 AD and was at its peak during the first 3 centuries of its occupation. By the 3rd century it had fallen out of use. There are two structures in particular which show it to be a settlement; a round house and a four post structure. The round house was in use between 500-200 BC and is represented by about 30 post holes, the number of post holes suggests it had been rebuilt several time, perhaps up to 6 times. The scale of it is apparently comparable to that of Little Woodbury. Part of it has been cut by both a Roman and Medieval field boundary ditches. Some has also been disturbed by the modern Bogholes Lane. The four post structure is thought to be granary of some kind. It is rectangular and about 25m north of the round house. It is dated to between the Late bronze Age/Middle Iron Age. In terms of finds two separate phases of Iron Age pottery was recovered; between c.1000-800 BC and c.500-300 BC. Some residule Neolithic pot and struck flints were also recovered. After the 3rd century ther is no subsequent activity on the site and only a few Medieval and Post Medieval finds crop up. (2)
