Full Description
In 1995 an evaluation was done by Wessex Archaeology at the Weatherlees Waste Treatment Works. Two ditches were observed, they both appear to be Medieval in date and contain a midden-like fill. One ditch contained a ceramic spindle whorl and a whetstone and one sherd of Medieval pottery dating between late 13th/early 14th century. Another two Medieval ditches were found in the same trench. One produced 14 sherds of pottery, 13 dating between c.1150-1225 AD and one was a residual sherd of Iron Age pottery. The second ditch produced a few more Medieval sherds most with a date of AD 1225. Eight pits were also found. Five pit produced over 18 sherds of Early Medieval pottery and one 21 sherds of Iron Age pottery. Three more pits also in the same area produced some later Medieval pottery c.1375 AD and building debris. (1)
