An excavation was undertaken in 2001 by Canterbury Archaeological Trust after evaluation trenching at Hope Cottage, on Cow Lane, Wincheap, Canterbury. The excavated area was approximately L shaped and had maximum dimensions of 18 metres. The bulk of the features located were pits and ditches of medieval to early post medieval date, with a later boundary wall and traces of an adjacent metalled pathway. In total fifteen pits, two ditches and a shallow gully were located. The main excavation produced a combined pottery assemblage of 476 sherds, and a further 35 were located in the evaluation trenches, much of this was of medieval date, with smaller quantities of early post medieval wares. As well as this, bowls from two clay pipes were recovered, six small fragments of medieval West Country slate, a total of nineteen small fragments of stone foreign to the area and eleven fragments of Roman tile and brick.
