Full Description
In 2002 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation at the Queensdown Riding and Livery Centre. A sunken featured building or Grubenhaus was found in one trench. It was sub-rectangular with rounded corners and measured 4.5 x 3.5m. There was a narrow ledge around the edge of the cut with steep sides. At either end there were two post holes which would have supported the roof uprights. The only finds within the lowest fill of the feature were mussel and oyster shell, animal bone and a small fragment of vessel glass. The upper fill contained more shell and bone in addition to pottery, burnt daub, an iron knife, fragments of Niedermendig lava quern stone and a fragment of a bone comb. A number of truncated pits, post holes or ditches were found nearby but contained no datable finds. (1)
The sunken featured building is described as dating to the mid-late 6th - 7th century in a 2020 desk-based assessment of the site. (2)
