Full Description

Site identified during transcription of features recorded on air photographs. (1)

A rectangular ditched enclosure extending south-east from the north-west boundary of the field. The part able to be evaulated formed a square of c.55m on each side. The south-east corner of the enclosure was cut by a wide causeway entrance. Within the enclosure a number of pits, post holes and storage pits were recorded. Pottery from three of the pits which had been reused as middens produced pottery dating to the late bronze - early iron age. Possibly related in some way to TR 36 NW 425?

To the east of the main enclosure there is a smaller rectangular enclosure TR3449969577 also seen on aerial photographs. In the eastern corner of was a large storage pit, which was not fully excavated due to its depth. Finds were of a similar date to those from the main enclosure. (2,3)

The cropmark remains of the linear ditch with attached rectilinear enclosures, ditches and a large scatter of possibly associated pits described by the previous authorities have been seen on aerial photographs and mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. Some of these features have been excavated/sampled during the course of the archaeological assessments undertaken as part of the Hartsdown Community Woodland Scheme, Margate undertaken by The Trust for Thanet Archaeology in 1995 which dated these features to the early Iron Age with some late Bronze Age finds. A second small square enclosue 9m x 9.5m with an entrance to the NW, similar to that mention in (2-3) above, possibly part of the same complex is located at TR 3464 6963. This enclosure is recorded separately. (4-7).
