Full Description
In 2012 Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation of land on Coldharbour Road. A Neolithic/Bronze Age ditch was the only feature observed. It consisted of an east-west orientated linear cut, 1.65m wide and with a maximum depth of 0.62m. Environmental samples from the earliest fill of the ditch included charcoal, cereal grains and fragments of animal and fish bone. The only finds from the ditch were worked and burnt flints, suggesting a Neolithic or Bronze Age date. (1)
In 2012 Wessex archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief on land at Coldharbour Road, Gravesend, between the 18th and 22nd of June 2012. This followed a desk based assessment from 2007 and the above archaeological evaluation. The watching brief moinitored the excavation of an area measuring 5.5 sq m down to the level of the archaeological horizon identified in the 2012 evaluation. This area did not cover the entire site, as part of the site was not to be subjected to ground work and therefore would not damange potential archaeological deposits. The excavation of the Site revealed the full extent of the feature previously indentified as ditch 204 in Trench 2 of the evaluation. It was apparent that the ditch did not continue in length but actually formed an oval shaped pit, measure 2m long by 1.38m wide and 0.44m deep. This pit contained four fills with varying amounts of charcoal but no datable artefacts. The base of the pit was sealed by a deliberate backfill.Based on the conclusions of the 2012 evaluation, the pit is dated to Neolithic/Bronze Age periods. (2)
