Full Description

In 2011 Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation and a strip, map and sample excavation at Haven Farm, Sutton Valence. Three stone quarries, two ditches, a possible hollow way (1.3m deep and over 10m wide) and a pit were identified during an evaluation and strip, map, and sample excavation carried out in 2011. The features contained finds dating to the medieval period including pottery fragments, animal remains, and ceramic building material.

The hollow way was located parallel and adjacent to a modern road, and it is suggested (2) that the feature may have been "part of a known north-south droveway connecting to the
villages of Leeds and Hucking to the north with the Weald to the south" (from the original report, 2).

Earlier features dating to the Roman period (TQ 84 NW 249) were also identified at the site. Environmental remains sampled from a Roman and a medieval feature were analysed, revealing the presence of burnt and unburnt mammal bones, teeth, fish bones, and plant remains. However, charred material in the samples was too limited to provide interpretations regarding plant use in the area. (1, 2)
