Monument record TR 37 SW 63 - Middle Bronze Age features, All Saints Avenue, Margate

Summary

During excavations associated with the construction of two new housing blocks at 135 All Saints Avenue in Margate, a possible trackway and a number of gullies of Middle Bronze Age date were uncovered. The limited evidence for occupation represented by features in the excavation of the eastern Block seem to indicate that this location is on the periphery of settlement in the area. Full Description

During excavations associated with the construction of two new housing blocks at 135 All Saints Avenue in Margate, a possible trackway and a number of gullies of Middle Bronze Age date were uncovered. The limited evidence for later occupation represented by features in the excavation of the eastern Block seem to indicate that this location is on the periphery of settlement in the area. A short gully with a similar orientation to the trackway ditches (cut 3042, fill 3041) was truncated by a modern pit at its western end and became indistinct and petered out at the eastern end. No finds were associated with this feature. A narrow gully was traced across the trench from north to south (cut 3033 filled by 3032; cut 3039, filled by 3038, containing a sherd of Middle Neolithic Peterborough ware) ending in a shallow and irregular pit cut 3037, filled by deposit 3036 from which a small sherd of Early Bronze Age Beaker ware was recovered. These features appear to be cut into the silty deposit 3021 contributing to the evidence for the antiquity of the deposit. Two parallel ditches running roughly east-west (master fills 3020 and 3040) may comprise a trackway. The northern ditch was first seen in Trench 3 of the evaluation, although it is interrupted in places it was seen to run parallel to a second southern ditch when the area was stripped. At the south western end of the feature is a clear cut terminal. The main body of the ditch was recorded and sectioned in evaluation Trench 3 (cut 305, fill 304). A further section was cut through the ditch (cut 3031, fill 3030) and a shallow terminal was excavated at the point where the ditch was interrupted at its north eastern end. A faint continuation of the ditch was observed further east and a short but distinct new segment is represented by cut 3035 (filled by 3034) cutting the north south linear cut 3033, filled by 3032. The southern section of the ditch extended beyond the southern limit of excavation but was sectioned in three places further east. The evidence of two distinct channels at the base of cut 3018 suggests the linear ditch may have been formed by multiple cutting events such as would occur on a track or drove way. The fill is shallow and homogenous across both channels and there is no evidence to demonstrate whether the two events were relatively close in date or whether a distinct recutting episode is represented. The ditch becomes shallower and less distinct further east and at the point of intersection with an apparently later pit the relationships are unclear (cut 3050; fill 3049) although the ditch does appear to continue in a truncated form beyond the pit and further where it intersect with the north south linear and pit cuts 3039 and 3037. Ditches 3020 and 3040 produced no pottery of this period, but worn and abraded sherds of earlier material. It is felt however, that the fresh sherd of Deverel-Rimbury pot from pit 3014 may have intruded from ditch 3040, due to their close association. It was also felt that this possible trackway (comprising ditches 3020 and 3040) may be more suited to a Middle Bronze Age date and be related to similar activity further to the south, in the area of Hartsdown Park (information summarised from source) (1-2)
