Full Description
In 2004 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation and topsoil strip on land off Tothill Street in Minster, Thanet. The excavations revealed that the site was intensively occupied in the Middle to Late Iron Age and numerous features were found dating to this period. These included refuse pits, quarry pits, post alignments and linear ditches. Apart from the posthole alignment, in trial trench 1, no other structural elements could be identified. However the
pottery, quern stone, daub, and frequent animal bone suggest settlement activity if not on the site but within the close vicinity. Two inhumation burials have also been identified, one at the western end of trial trench 7, the other at towards the northern end of trial trench 4. Both contained recognisable human remains that suggested that the burials were aligned north to south. Other features present in both these trial trenches were not investigated but are also thought also to be graves. The bulk of the datable artefacts retrieved during the evaluation comprises Iron Age pottery and quern stone fragments, initial assessment suggests a mid to late Iron Age date range of c.400 BC – AD 43..
