Full Description
21 graves were excavated: it is probable that one other feature and a possible second also represented the remains of graves on the basis of their form size and location. One further feature had some grave like characteristics but the possible interpretation is very tentative. The main group, comprising 12 cuts situated within an area of c.10m in diameter was located across the south east portion of barrow , encroaching slightly on the northern edge of the of adjacent barrow 2. A possible outlier of the group lay 5m to the south west just within the confines of the barrow two ditch. A small group (NW group) of four graves situated c 15m to the north west of the main cluster also partly intruded in the infilled ditch of barrow 3. Given their position in the north west corner of the site it is probable that they formed pf a more extensive cemetery group which continued to the north west of the excavated area.. a similarly small group (SW group) of three possibly five graves lay 25m to the south of the main group (in an area of c.13m by 19m) mostly between barrows 1 and 2 but one within the confines of the former. As with the NW group, it is possible that further associated graves lay within the tree conservation area of the site, just to the east. A singleton was situated c.12m to the south of the nearest grave. The grave cut a middle Saxon pit and ditch, which in turn cut through he fills of the Barrow 1 ditch. This probably represents one of the latest graves in the group. A final tentative grave was located 20m to the east of all of the others, between the inner ditch of Barrow 4 and the :ate Bronze Age central enclosure. Human bone survived in only two cases, and grave recognition was based on form, size and archaeological components and most graves included some form of grave goods. Ther was considerable variation in the dimensions of the graves, length range from 1..57m to 2.85m with an average of 2.02m and widths of 0.47m to 1.05m with an average of 0.72m the surviving depths of the graves averaged 0.2m with a minimum of 0.08m and a maximum of 0.4m. The largest grave was the only one to produce conclusive evidence for a coffin and the burial remains were also the richest recovered in terms of grave goods, including several items of jewellery and other personal equipment. Most graves were sub rectangular in shape and most lay on an east west alignment. A N-S aligned linear feature situated on the eastern margins of the north-west burial group could have formed an eastern boundary to the mortuary area. a chronological sequence derived from the graves goods associated with the burials indicates that the first graves were3 dug in the early 6th century and appears to have continued into the late 7th century (150-200 years of use). This is a long time for such a small cemetery and it is likely that there are many further burials located outside of the limits of excavation in the fields surrounding the site.
