Full Description
In 2007 Kent Archaeological Projects carried out an evaluation on a water main route. A large ditch, 3.14m wide and 0.94m deep, with 27 sherds of Late Iron Age pottery, animal teeth and burnt flint recovered from it. Another ditch of 2.16m width and 1.03m depth was found to the west of the first.
A subsequent excavation in 2007 by Kent Archaeological Projects found evidence of Middle Iron Age through to early Roman occupation of the area. Ditches, gullies, post holes, pits and a kiln. The earliest feature was a large ditch that was in use from the Middle Iron Age onwards. Most features dated to the Late Iron Age, with the kiln being used for pottery production and falling out of use towards the end of the 1st century BC. Post holes nearby may have related to a small structure. Evidence of possible iron working was found in the form of burnt debris and a large piece of iron slag. The site appears to have gone out of use in the late 1st century AD. (2)
