Full Description

In 2006 Oxford Archaeology carried out work at the site. A large boundary ditch which probably had a bank to the west of it. The earliest silting of the ditch contained Middle Iron Age pottery. Subsequently the ditch was partially filled, possibly with material from the slighting of the bank. Two inhumation burials were dug into this material. These were of an adult and an infant. An additional inhumation was placed in the southern terminal of the ditch, in a coffin, and was associated with a mid 1st century vessel. The ditch finally silted in the Roman period. A crouched inhumation of a 11-13 year old child was found nearby but was undated. A number of Middle Iron Age gullies and pits were also recorded in the area. One pit contained a cow skull and what are likely to be instances of structured deposition. The bank may have survived as a feature for some considerable time as later features appear to respect the likely area it would have occupied. (1)
