Full Description
In 2007 Oxford Archaeology carried out a strip, map and sample excavation. A scatter of Iron Age features were found east of the Bronze Age enclosure. These included a row of Early to Middle Iron Age storage pits, one of which produced a sequence indicative of structured deposition. This pit had 14 fills which produced animal bones, loomweights and pottery. The animal remains included a partially articulated piglet, bones of sheep/goat, frog, rat/mouse, roe and red deer (including full antler sets), cow and horse along with some fragments of human bone. The pottery included intact vessels and part of a very large storage jar. Another pit had fewer finds but did include a significant portion of a human skull. Post holes were also found in the area, with at least two four post structures. (1)
Some of these features may have been found during Channel Tunnel Rail Link works carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service. Additional features of similar date and type were found to the southwest. (2)
