Full Description
In 2007 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation. Pits, ditches, gullies and other features apparently of a late Roman occupation site were found. (1)
In 2007-8 Archaeology South-East carried out an excavation. A ditch and a pit were found, both dated to the 2nd and 3rd century. The ditch was probably a field boundary. The area was more intensively utilised in the late Roman period. A number of ditches, pits, a spread of material associated with post holes interpreted as a midden, a road and traces of a building were found and dated to the 4th and early 5th century.
The road had two ditches plus three features cut into its surface. Fourth century material was found within the metalling. One of the features dug into the road was a small pit like feature that contained a large swan's head harness pendant.
The building was evidenced by post holes and a group of other features interpreted as foundation trenches. The structure appears to have been a short-lived one dating from the fourth century.
A cremation burial was also found but was undated. (2)
