Full Description

During Channel Tunnel Rail Link works carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service found evidence of Late Iron Age/Roman activity around Henhurst Road. The earliest feature may have been a metalled trackway running north-south, possibly dated to the Late Iron Age. In the Roman period an east-west route crossed the area. This road was heavily rutted by wheeled traffic. A field system was organised across the area at right angles to the road.

The road fell out of use by the 2nd century AD. A rectangular patch of gravel surfacing was laid out at this time and perhaps represents an area of hardstanding for crop processing. A number of ditches and pits were also dug and perhaps represent waste disposal activity for settlement beyond the limits of excavation. (1)
