Full Description
During excavations carried out at Springhead in 2007-2008 ahead of the development of the area, a small Roman enclosure was uncovered. The enclosure was square and was located within the northern corner of a Late Iron Age enclosure, the ditches of this Iron Age enclosure had been re cut and modified to create this early Roman enclosure. It measured 14m square and was defined by shallow ditches with a 3m entrance on its southern side. The nature of the enclosure remains uncertain but given the proximity of the sancturay complex it is possible that the enclosure had some religious function. A small amount of early Roman pottery was uncovered in association with the enclosure and it has been assigned a 1st century date based on this pottery. (1)
