Monument record TQ 67 SW 1362 - Anglo-Saxon pit, Springhead

Summary

Excavations undertaken by Wessex Archaeology ahead of development at Springhead, revealed an isolated pit with a likely Anglo Saxon date. The dating is based on several finds including annular loomweights which are typically Saxon.(location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available informaiton)

Full Description

In 2007/8 Wessex Archaeology carried out a programme of works. An isolated Anglo-Saxon pit was found c.190m east of the large cemetery. The pit was 3m long, 1.5m wide and 0.74m deep. Although no pottery was found within it, pieces of lava quernstone and fragments of annular loomweights were recovered, both of which are typically Anglo-Saxon in date. (1)
