Monument record TR 37 SE 19 - Site of two round barrows, Hackemdown Banks, Broadstairs and St. Peters

Summary

Two round barrows were located near Kingsgate, at a site known as Hackendown Banks. These monuments were investigated in 1743 and 1865. Finds reported at the time included several crouched burials with urns in cists in the first investigation. A tower was built on the larger of the two barrows which is still visible as a mound; there is no trace of the other.

Full Description

[TR 3954 7028] Hackemdown Banks Tower (on site of) Tumulus [NR] (1) Two round barrows at Kingsgate, known as Hackendown Banks, were opened in 1743 and 1865 respectively. Several crouched burials with urns in cists were found in the first one opened. A monument was built on the larger of the two barrows. (2)(3) The barrow surmounted by Hackendown Banks Tower is still recognisable as a strong swelling; there is no trace of the other. The round barrow and remains of the folly built on its mound were seen as an earthwork and structures in LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 07-DEC-2017 and RAF/58/618 V 5110 11-APR-1951. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (11-12)
