Monument record TQ 57 SE 54 - Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Stone Castle Quarry

Summary

Rescue excavations 1960-61, found two circles wiith associated hearths, storage pits and pottery, probably of Iron Age date. The smaller circle probably enclosed a hut; the larger, was probably a cattle enclosure. Romano-British occupation, late 1st century to 3rd century., was also found. This consisted of a rectangular pit (c.20ft x 24 ft x 6-8 ft deep) cut initially for chalk but subsequently used for domestic rubbish and a site for two ovens; the flint foundations of a small building built over the filled-in pit, and a deep 'v'-shaped ditch, which cut through one of the storage pits in the smaller circle. A series of intersecting ditches on the site were probably field boundaries.

Full Description

TQ 583732 Rescue excavations by M.O.W, 1960-61, at Stone Castle Quarry, found two circles (diameters 58 ft. and 138 ft. respectively), with associated hearths, storage pits and pottery, attesting Iron Age, Southern Second 'B' occupation. The smaller circle probably enclosed a hut; the larger, was probably a cattle enclosure. No post-hole evidence was found, but this may have been stripped away by the bull-dozer. R.B. occupation, late 1st c - 3rd c., was also found. A series of intersecting ditches on the site were probably field boundaries, but of different periods: one ditch cuts the larger circle, but deviates to avoid the storage pit within that circle (1). Listed (2) as a farmstead. (1-2) Half-filled excavation trenches at TQ 58187335 (a) mark the R.B. site. Of the 1A site, at TQ 58307319, (a) nothing is to be seen on the ground, which is part open field under corn stubble and part woodland. (3) Excavation report and detailed list of finds. (4)
