Full Description

In 2011/12 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation and excavation. Three north-east/south-west parallel ditches and two south-east/north-west ditches were found. There was possible evidence of later modification, as well as isolated ditches that could also have been part of the system. Other medieval activity was evidenced by a gully and a group of stake holes, which formed a slightly curving row, perhaps indicating a fence. A pit was also found, its fill containing scallop, mussel and oyster shells. A later medieval phase consisted of a group of intercutting pits dug in a brickearth hollow. This phase of activity cut the earlier field ditches, suggesting the system had fallen from use by this stage. Pits, post holes and stake holes were found across the site but no structures could be identified from these. The latest activity consisted of ditches crossing the site. All the medieval features were sealed below a layer of colluvium. (1)
