Full Description

In 2007/8 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation. A polygonal enclosure, possibly representing a wooden structure with a surrounding ambulatory, was built in the late third century AD. It replaced the earlier landuse of the site (see TR 15 NE 1097). A number of pits were associated with this phase of activity and appear to have received votive deposits. 141 Roman coins were recovered, with a particular concentration noted from the polygonal enclosure. The coinage is of small denominations and the bulk of the assemblage falls within Reece Period 17 (c. AD 330–348), with no coinage later than AD 364. Other placed finds included hobnailed footwear, personal jewellery and fragmented glass vessels, in addition to potential food items, including cattle, sheep/goat, pig and marine fish, and barley, bread-type wheat, spelt, and oats, as well as possible pea or bean and rye. A particular concentration of hazelnut shell was also noted. (1)
