Full Description
In 2007/8 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation. A sequence of three medieval ditches, probably the rear boundaries to properties fronting Watling Street/Old Dover Road, and pits and post holes were found. One pit could have been a sunken featured building, as it had post holes at its northern and southern sides. Animal bone included cattle, pig, sheep/goat, hare and bird, as well as articulated horse, dog and cat skeletons. Marine fish are present, but during the medieval period, fresh water eel was also introduced. The range of bone elements indicated that pig and sheep/goat were represented by meat bearing elements, while cattle contained a mixture of all elements, including horncores. (1)
