Full Description

Area F, south-west of High Halstow village, was a portion of the Grain-Shorne pipeline excavated in 2009.

There were few features in the area but the presence of subsoil across the site led to the conclusion that it was unlikely that ploughing had removed any other archaeological remains.

A field boundary and a series of pits were tentatively dated to the Late Bronze Age. The ditch was 1m wide and 0.22m deep whilst the pits were mostly sub-circular, up to 3.8m long and 0.22m deep. These produced a few sherds of Late Bronze Age date.

On the hill crest the south-west terminal of a curvilinear ditch was excavated and dated to the Iron Age. It was 2.8m wide and 0.32m deep.

The north terminus of a field boundary ditch and a scatter of features were dated to the Roman period. The ditch was 0.72m wide and 0.28m deep. Three sub-circular pits were up to 3.4m in diameter and 0.28m deep.

Seven additional pits were excavated but could not be confidently dated to any of the phases considered above (1-2).
