Full Description
In 2004 an evaluation and in 2005 an excavation following a watching brief were carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust.
The evaluation found a possible trackway, disturbed footings of a stone wall with an associated floor surface, post holes, stake holes and a large pit containing a disturbed daub surface. This was interpreted as evidence of a small fishing settlement. Pottery recovered dated from the 12th to 14th centuries.
The excavation slightly to the south found several metalled surfaces, clay floors, occupation deposits, post holes, stake holes and a series of large pits. This was interpreted as indicating the presence of a large building or buildings within the area. Pottery recovered suggested the activity for focused around the 12th to 14th centuries though material from the 15th and 16th centuries were also found, perhaps indicating that it continued into the late medieval period.
