Full Description

Excavations following an earlier archaeological evaluation of a site off Tothill Street near Minster in Thanet revealed evidence for early Bronze Age activity. This comprised a Crouched burial which was south-facing and located in the north-western part of the site. Whilst heavily degraded by agricultural activity it would appear that no placed deposits/grave goods were associated with the grave. An Early Bronze Age date was suggested by the presence of a small body sherd of a Collared Urn. Further south, a second, this time undated, burial which was also heavily degraded by agricultural activity and but appeared to be crouched was uncovered. In this, the remains of a 5–10 year old child were set on an E–W alignment, which combined with the shallowness of the grave cut and apparent disposition of the body suggests that a Bronze Age date is likely. These burials are almost certainly related to the Early Bronze Age inhumations found at the Minster Services site (Canterbury Archaeological Trust 2005) immediately to the north. An Early Bronze Age date is also preferred for a single, residual flint and grog tempered sherd from a pit discovered at the site. (1) (information summarised from source)
