Full Description

In 2005 Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation, finding a ditch. (1)

In 2005 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an excavation of the feature. The ditch was found to contain Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age pottery. This is probably residual material and the ditch was thought to be Late Iron Age in date. This roughly North South Aligned ditch extended beyond the limit of excavation at the southern end. At the top of the ditch profile was a gentle slope but there was a clear break of slope half way down where the sides changed to near a near vertical angle forming a slot at the base and giing the ditch a Y shaped profile. Some of the fills of the ditch included some wheat and unidentified cereal grains. (2-3)

A watching brief by the Trust for Thanet Archaeology in 2007 recorded the ditch continuing to the south. (4)

The cropmark remains of the linear ditch described by authorities 2-4 above can be seen on aerial photographs leading to and probably associated with a fragmented cropmark complex of rectilinear enclosures of a probable settlement centred at TR 3606 6925. The site comprises at least two ditch-defined enclsosures and traces of the double outer enclosure ditches. These features have been mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. (5)
