Full Description
Limited excavation by CAT in 1989 revealled a series of 2nd C AD features inc poss footings of a rectangular building and assoc road or courtyard of tap slag. Several pits of various shapes but all under 1m deep were encountered plus part of one ditch. Some waterlogged fills preserved organic remains inc part of a wooden bowl. The site is suggested to have been on the Ro coastline with poss occupation extending S to the Thanet Way (1).
Description from record MKE115895:
In 1989 the Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a rapid excavation following the discovery of Roman features during topsoil removal. The excavation discovered two medieval ditches but all the remaining features seemed to be 2nd centry in date. These included a possible rectangular building and courtyard/road, an expanse of iron slag indicating a nearby furnace, a shallow ditch and numerous pits. Finds included iron slag, pottery, fragments of a wooden bowl, box-flue and roof tiles. This may indicate that a villa site lay to the south of this industrial area. (1)
