Full Description
In 2011 Pre-Construct Archaeology carried out an evaluation. Pits, ditches and post holes of Roman date were found. (1)
In 2011 Pre-Construct Archaeology carried out an excavation. Three phases of Roman activity were identified. The first dated to the 2nd and 3rd century AD and consisted of two ditches, a small number of pits and post holes. The ditches could form part of a field system. One of the pits had evidence of in situ burning. A number of post holes were possibly associated, forming a circular structure and possibly a four post structure. The second phase of activity dated to the 3rd and 4th century AD. It consisted of a ditch, a gully, two pits and a number of post holes. Both of these phases of activity were sealed beneath a layer of dark soil which contained late Roman finds and pottery. The finds included two fragments of box flue tile and a piece of a chimney, indicating a high status masonry structure in the vicinity. Other finds included 47 coins, brooches and tweezers. A further 27 coins were found in post Roman colluvium that sealed this layer. (2)
