Full Description
In 2012 a large area was excavated on land to the east of the Coach and Horses on Tayne Field by a team from the University of Reading. The site was occupied in the Saxo-Norman period, c. AD 1080-1175, with occupation possibly going back into the 10th century. A cluster of pits were located in the southern half of the site. These were mostly filled with cess sealed beneath capping layers. Buildings associated with this phase of occupation appear to have consisted of widely-spaced timber uprights set upon flint post-pads. A number of boundary ditches were also found, one of which contained an articulated horse skeleton. (1)
