Full Description
In 2013 an archaeological evaluation took place by Archaeology South East on behalf of Berkely Homes at St Clements Valley, Greenhithe, a site proposed for residential development. The evaluation involved the machine excavation of 15 trenches across the north and west of the site. The archaeological features were mainly found in the northern part of the site, and within 3 trenches.
In trench 2 a ditch was recorded, running east-west and being 1.08m wide. Finds were 2 pieces of worked flint and animal bone. The flakes are probably of Bronge Age or Iron Age date. The animal bone consisted of 8 poorly preserved fragments of scapulae of large mammals. A piece of probable Middle Bronze Age pottery found on the surface of the feature was probably residual.
Trench 3 featured a ditch running on a northeast-southwest alignment and being 0.69m wide and 1.04m deep. Finds were flint and pottery. The flint consisted of 3 flakes, 3 chips and a fragmentary core. The pottery consists of 3 tiny flecks of pottery from a single thin walled vessel of finer flint-tempered ware which can be broadly dated to Late Bronze Age to Middle/Late Iron Age.
Trench 4 featured three pits cut into the natural geology. An oval pit measuring 0.74m by 0.61m and 0.28m deep was cut on its southern edge by another oval pit measuring 1.3m by 1.24m and 0.33m deep. Both pits contained charcoal flecks which are the result of burning. A third pit of 1.72m in diameter was 0.38m deep.(1)
