Full Description

Several medieval features were discovered in Zone 11, particularly at the northern end, on the Sevenscore slope. These comprised a series of rectilinear ditched enclosures aligned WNW-ESE, probably part of a single complex, overlying ditches of an Iron Age and Roman date. Dating material was relatively scarce but four of the ditches contained Medieval pottery of a broadly mid 11th to mid 13th century date. The enclosure complex covered an area of 40m by at least 70m, continuing beyond the limit of excavation to the west. One definite enclosure was identified, this enclosed an area around 18m wide and was defined by a series of ditches all between 1m and 1.5m in width and 0.3-0.4m in depth. A further ditch was discovered in the eastern arm of Zone 11, on a similar alignment to the features to the north. It feature did not contain any finds but it cut a feature of late Anglo Saxon date.
