Full Description

Initial evaluation trenching of site (centred TR 36175 66500) in 1995: A LBA ditch uncovered, the fill containing fragments of animal bone and 19 sherds of pottery. (LBA) Part of the pit and a post hole of a SFB were exposed, 2 stake-holes were noted in the base of the pit. The fill produced 1 amber and 5 glass beads, fragments of a glass cup/bowl, an ivory pin, perforated CU alloy disc, pieces of FE slag, spindle whorl and 35 sherds of pottery. A MD ditch seen in cropmarks, contained residual Saxon pottery. A wall footing was noted and a foundation trench, peg tile, brick and pottery was recovered. The building was surrounded by 2 ditches, also seen on cropmarks. Fill included ceramic, shell and bone. A pit was located containing pottery and bone. Additional ditches were noted, probably part of the MD enclosure complex. Flotation of samples produced environmental info. (1)
