Monument record TR 36 SW 407 - Late bronze age enclosure - the 'southern enclosure', Cliffs End Farm

Summary

During excavation in advance of new housing a series of late bronze age enclosures were found. The southern enclosure comprised two sections of ditch that seemed to comprise the north-west corner of the enclosure, including an entrance. Like the northern and central enclosures the southern enclosure dated to the late bronze age. A substantial quantity of animal bone, a human ulna and pottery was found.

Full Description

During excavation in advance of new housing in 2004/5 a series of late bronze age enclosures were found. The ‘southern’ enclosure comprised, was likely similar in form to the northern and central enclosures which were also discovered at this site. Unfortunately much of the enclosure lay beyond the limit of excavation and only two sections of ditch were revealed, these seemed to comprise the north-west corner of the enclosure, including an entrance. The southern section of ditch was a single V shaped cut, 1.15m wide and 0.8m deep, the only dating evidence from this section of ditch was a small amount of Late Bronze Age pottery. To the northwest the form of the ditch changed. It was larger; 1.86m wide and 1.1m deep with a steep U shaped profile and a flat base. It is therefore likely that this ditch was not continuous, but two sections forming two terminals either side of an entrance. Animal and human bone was recovered from the fill of the northern section of the ditch alongside 1kg of pottery which was similar to that recovered from the northern enclosure.
