Full Description
In 2014 an archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of residential development at St Clements Valley, Greenhithe. A possible enclosure and trackway, accompanied by pits, was discovered that dated to the late 2nd or early 1st millennium BC although there was little dateable material. The features have been interpreted as probably being of agricultural origin.
An ENE-WSW aligned ditch ran across the north of the site. It was 0.9m wide and c. 0.15m deep. It was dated to the middle / late bronze age on the basis of a pottery sherd. Several fragments of horse teeth were also found. A similar ditch lay directly to the south and ran parallel with the first, probably forming a trackway.
Slightly to the north fragmentary ditch lengths suggested an enclosure. Several postholes contained flints and flakes which may have been packing for posts and numerous small pits containing flints and burnt material were found. Finds from the site included flints, animal bone and a few pieces of pottery.(1)
