Full Description
The Anglo-Saxon features were sealed by an agricultural soil containing pottery ranging in date from the Bronze Age through to the 12th century. Cutting the soil were many pits and post holes indicating pre-Abbey activity of indeterminate nature. A track was found that they have related to this activity, aligned parallel with North Homes Road and cut by features dating to 13th century, including rubbish pits and a limekiln. To the north of this track was a 1.2m deep ditch, possibly an early boundary against North Holmes Road, which remained open until at least the 16th century. The gravel track was cut by the foundations of a substantial building 11m wide and at least 20m long with internal aisles, possibly a barn (TR 15 NE 1341). To the south east of this structure was a masonry built kiln/furnace dating, as did the barn, to the late 13th century. The kiln has been tenatively interprete as a drying oven for cereal. The barn and associated features were sealed by post-Dissolution garden loams, though it is possible the barn structure survived after this event.
""Site 16 produced a predominately early medieval assemblage, mostly dating to before c. 1250. At least three profiles of local coarseware cooking pots were recovered, together with parts of several twelfth-century North French/Flemish coarsewares, including the upper half of a spouted pitcher. These imports are a useful addition to the range of these poorly-understood wares." (2)
150 Medieval sherds dating to AD 1250-1375, mainly Tyler Hill ware. 23 late Medieval sherds dating to AD 1375-1550 (2).
"Between 1983 and 1996 seventeen excavations, evaluations and watching/recording briefs were undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) within the grounds of Canterbury Christ Church University College⦠In 1996 CAT produced an interim assessment (Hicks 1996) [3] of the potential of the archive at that date. The remit of the document was to assess the quantity, quality and research potential of all the stratigraphic and finds data recovered by that time. It and included a costed recommendation for the post-excavation analysis and publication of the results of the work. Since then the stratigraphic report on the 1995 excavation has been completed (CCC95) and a major excavation (CCC96) undertaken. The aim of this report is to incorporate the results of the more recent work into the 1996 assessment, and to present the revised document to CCCUC and EH for their consideration." (2)
A desk-based assessment of a nearby site produced a map of archaeological features at the site; these included the pits, and agricultural layer, and a boundary ditch. Some of the pits which have been depicted on the GIS may abe post-medieval in date as it is unclear whiether some features date from the Anglo-Saxon/medieval/post-medieval periods. (4)
