Full Description
An archaeological evaluation took place at Folkeston Cricket club in 2011 involving the excavatio on 8 trenches measuring 25m long. In trench five a north-east to south-west orientated ditch was observed, containing a few fragments of CBM.
In trench 4 three more ditches were excavated, they were all orientated at different angles from north to south and all thought to represent a drainage or boundary ditch. A small sub-circular pit was also exposed in this trench, the fill contained fragments of Iron age pottery and worked flint.
In trench 5 a single linear feature was observed, it contained charcoal and tiny fragments of possible later Bronze Age pottery.
The last trench revealed a substantial ditch running from north to south. The ditch contained fragments of probably Late/Iron Age early Roman pottery and fragments of horse bone and is believed to be defensive. A sub-circular feature was also observed but it had no finds or clear relationship.
The activity is thought to date from the Late Iron early Roman period, whilst no clear structural evidence was discovered the area may be associated with a farmstead type of settlement. Aditional preihstoric pottery was excavated together with some possible Medieval and Post-Medieval finds, which may be associated to Broadmead Manor, although there is no clear evidence for this.
