Full Description
An archaeological evaluation took place at the proposed Tunstall Church primary school in Sittingbourne in 2014. An 1840 map and 18 evaluation trenches were used to identify the post-medieval brick production site. In trench 2 a large pit filled with bricks was excavated, the pit was 6m long, more than 1.8m wide and 1.2m deep. The fill was entirely brick, many were whole but warped or poorly shaped, this means the pit may be a dump for badly made bricks on the brick manafacturing site. In trench 11 another pit filled with rubble was uncovered, shallower than the other pit. A shallow spread of bricks was also found in trench 3, it is possible this was a trackway for the post-medieval brick production site. From these places a high number of brocks and roofing tiles were excavate A moderate assemblage of post-medieval pottery was excavated from other areas. A clay tobacco pipe, come slag, a small assemblage of glass and a single piece of burnt clay were also found. (1)
