Monument record TQ 94 SE 162 - Late Iron Age/Early Roman features at Chilmington Green

Summary

A number of Late Iron Age/Early Roman features including a ditches, pits and linear features were found in an archaeological evaluation in 2011. An undated potential cremation feature was also excavated. Finds included pottery, clay pipe, CBM, fired clay, worked flint, slag, metalwork, animal bone and shell.

Full Description

An archaeological evaluation took place at Chilmington Green in 2011 ahead of a proposed development. A number of features were observed within 10 of the evaluation trenches. 4 ditches of different alignements were excavated. They all contained pottery sherds dating to the Roman period. These ditches may form part of an enclosure or settlement.Another feature believed to be a tree throw was excavated, containg 11 sherds of early-Roman grog-tempered ware. The surrounding area also contained more pottery and CBM. There were also Four pits of Roman date were also excated.
In trench 3 a pit with a burnt fill was excavated producing burnt bone, it is undated but could possibly be a cremation although the bone cannot be characterised as human or animal.
Three linear features believed to be land drains were also excavated, a quantity of pottery tanging in date from medieval to post-medieval was excavated from these features. . A single ditch was definitively dated to the medieval period.
Overall there as a large quantitiy of pottery, mainly Late Iron Age/Early Roman British, there was also 50 sherds of Medieval pottery and 53 sherds of Post-Medieval pottery. 8 fragments of clay pipe were also excavated and a number of postmedieval and medieval roofing tiles. Small amounts of fired clay, worked flint, mwtalwork and shell were also found. 78 fragments of animal bone were also excated mainly from the Roman ditches. (1)
