Monument record TQ 66 SW 20 - Late Iron Age/Early Romano-British enclosure system

Summary

A number of Late Iron Age/Early Romano British features including numerous ditches pits and gullies were excavated in 2010. Oven kilns stakeholes and pits that could not be dated were found in association with them and the features are believed to make up an enclosure system. A Mesolithic palaeochannel was also excavated with a quantity of struck flint recovered from it. Summary from record TQ 66 SW 15: During gas pipe laying in November 1969 a ditch containing 2nd century Romano-British pottery was discovered. The ditch was subsequently traced by a resistivity survey.

Full Description

In 2010 a number of excavations took place along a proposed Pipeline from Farningham to Hadlow.
There were also over 15 ditches and 15 pits dating to the Late Iron Age/Early Romano-British period of different orientations and sizes. The features are indicative of an enclosure system with 3 definate different phases of activity which can be identified. There was also features which could not be definitively dated but are believed to be late Iron Age or Early Roman by association. This includeds an oven/kiln, more pits and a series of postholes which may have related to a structure. A number of sherds of pottery were recovered providing dating evidence. 19 Roman coins were also recovered with only three that can be dated. (1)

Description from record TQ 66 SW 15:
TQ 602647. During gas pipe laying in November 1969 a ditch Containing 2nd century Romano-British pottery was discovered. Information from R. Walsh. (1) TQ 60186473. An intensive resistivity survey was carried out over the Romano British site near Ash Church and trial excavations made. The continuation of the Romano- British ditch was located. (2)

A second ditch believed to be an enclosure ditch was observed on a watching brief in 2010. A small quantity of Romano-British pottery was recovered from it. (4)
