Full Description
During February and March 2014, an archaeological excavation was carried out on the site that would form an extension of a sand extraction quarry.
Two cremations found within a few metres of one another alongside two pits containing probable pyre material. One cremation was urned, and comprised of an in situ cremation vessel, represented by an inverted biconnical urn, dating to the first half of the 2nd millennium BC (2000-1500 BC). The unurned cremation contained fewer bone fragments to the urned cremation and is dated provisionally to the same period as the urned cremation. Each cremation contains a single individual, representing adults or older juveniles.
Two nearby pits contain possible pyre debris, as they contain charcoal similar to the samples recovered from both cremation burials, oak-rich charcoal.
The gathering of the pits contianing the cremation burials and possible pyre residue are suggested to represent a small Early Bronze Age Cemetery.(1)
